The seventh Capitol Portrait was released just last night, and it’s one we’ve definitely been looking forward to: our first official look at “sly and cunning” District Seven Victor, Johanna Mason! What do you think of this portrait? Check out the amount of detail in her costume!

The Capitol Couture countdown has been reset, and the next portrait will be revealed in about eight hours (10 am PST)! The caption for the empty chair posted at their Instagram account reads:

#SolidAsARock with just the right #TouchOfShyness. Tomorrow at 10am PT, only @PerezHilton

The “solid as a rock” part might be hinting at D2… but the “right touch of shyness” may imply something different… a certain baker, perhaps? Hint: Those are actually direct quotes from the book! Who do you think it’ll be?

She looks different then how I pictured, I wish her hair had been down.

I don’t think she wears her hair like that normally. It’s a Capitol portrait, they made her hair like that and made her wear that dress.

      Peeta is sweet!

wow speechless man she looks real brutal

I like it. I love how she looks kind of bored with all the glamour and is barely holding her rose.

    I love it I love it I can’t breath I LOVE IT.

  4.

Absolutely love it! Just perfect – I love how she is barely holding onto the white rose and you know she is just going to toss it aside once the picture is taken. Jena’s eyes and expression are just perfect IMO, my confidence in her nailing the role of Johanna has absolutely sky rocketed (when it was already pretty high!)

I love how her dress looks like a tree! But a very fashionable one! In the last movie the tribute parade costumes were a little rediculous (cowboy suits etc) and the interview dresses looked like prom dresses gone wrong. But this… wow. I absolutely LOVE the dress. I wish her hair was like a pixie cut though.. but hey.No complains here! Her expression is perfect!

As for the next one, I never considered Peeta to be shy. But I know its peeta cuz his name comes from Peter, which comes from the Latin word Petra, meaning ‘rock’. (For those of you who are religious, you might know that Jesus told Peter in the Bible ‘You are Peter, on this rock I shall built my church’.) Thus, the next is indeed Peeta. (I guess those six years of latin weren’t entirely useless!) I love how they used his original meaning in the clue!

    •

well, as we mentioned above, both the “solid as a rock” part and the “right touch of shyness” part are direct quotes from the book, so i guess they’re both “canon,” at least as far as katniss is concerned. ;)

i totally agree , this movie looks alot more safisticated if the last movie made these it would be cheap photoshop but this is beautiful

I always thought it was “Peeta” as in Pita bread, just as every other character that has its name based on some object *shrug*

    •
      Satsuma

These quotes are both from the THG tribute parade scenes. During the parade, Katniss thinks, “I’m glad now I have Peeta to clutch for balance, he is so steady, solid as a rock”. After the parade ends, and Peeta tells her that she should “wear flames more often”, Katniss notices “And then he gives me a smile that seems so genuinely sweet with just the right touch of shyness that unexpected warmth rushes through me”.

Note that this scene takes place way before Peeta reveals his crush on Katniss. Katniss also seems to remember this scene at a certain juncture in Mockingjay.

yeah. sometimes I am just so desperate to turn my obviously useless education to something that will help me understand the world better…

But maybe I am right! Maybe Suzanna really named him after Petrous lol. I might have unlocked something!

        Or Im just overreacting.

        •
          Ivana

I think she definitely meant for him to represent both “bread” and “rock” – it can’t be a coincidence that he’s compared to a rock so many times in the book, and he also happens to camouflage himself as a rock! :)

And if you’ve heard Suzanne Collins read Mockingjay with an Apalachian accent, you get the idea how “Peter” could over time turn into “Peeta”…

            Death2analog

ha ha ha! I saw that!

I also remember Jennifer Lawrence mentioning in the “unscripted interview” that Gary Ross asked them to do a southern accent but they didn’t do it after all. Can’t picture that, haha!

I like the deeper meaning you gave to the name, I guess we’ll never know where does it really come from.

my first reaction when i saw this portrait was “OH MY GOD WHAT IS THAT”… but within 0.2 seconds i was already in love with it. the detail on this is mind blowing (you guys! her bracelet is made with NAILS! you guys!), and while i’m still iffy about the hair, it does seem like a very capitol hairstyle i must admit, and i just LOVE everything else.

her expression is so perfect. i can’t get over it. i’ve never for one minute doubted that jena would be a terrific johanna and this only reinforces that belief. i can’t wait to see her in action!

    •

Absolutely – I knew we wouldn’t be disappointed when we got the first glimpse of her :D

I’m so excited to see a glimpse of Johanna! Jena’s going to rock this.

Lord, she looks fantastic. She is out-fiercing Tyra right there.

I think she’ll wind up being one of my favorite parts of the CF and MJ movies.

Though I was wondering – as someone else mentioned with Katniss’s MJ dress from yesterday, how could this pose get by the Capitol? The expression + near-dropping of the rose = rebellion to me.

    •

well, i guess while the capitol as a general rule doesn’t accept rebellious behavior, they also have to give the public what they want. johanna played the “helpless girl” card in her games, but after the way those games ended, there’s no way anyone can see her as “soft and sweet” anymore. and i’m sure the capitol people absolutely gobble up the axe murderer personality. if she was presented as anything but, nobody would buy it, not anymore.

going by your “tyra” comment (which is so accurate it hurts, LOL), by now johanna = fierce, even for the capitol, so that has to come through in her portrait. even snow can’t force her to completely change herself because that would disappoint the rest of the capitol. he only did that with katniss because her offense was a lot more obvious, plus she was new, easier to manipulate, and she’d already shown her more vulnerable side during the games anyway (prim, rue, peeta).

Good points all, as usual. :)

Totally agree with you on how Johanna could have gotten away with looking so rebellious in her Capitol portrait. Also, where Katniss is concerned, if the movie follows book canon, the dress Katniss wears at the interview is the dress the Capitol citizens THEMSELVES voted she should wear at her wedding. We also know that to the Capitol citizens, the Mockingjay is simply the latest fashion icon, NOT a symbol of rebellion.

So, just like with Johanna, Snow would realize that if he nixed the dress, he would be disappointing the Capitol citizens who wanted to see Katniss in it. It also seemed that he is trying to downplay the rebellion to Capitol citizens, and pretending everything is status quo. He can’t say “I’m refusing to let Katniss Everdeen wear the dress you voted for, because it’s design is too rebellious”, without admitting that there IS a rebellion brewing.

Also, I never got the sense that SC meant for Snow to be an evil genius who never makes mistakes. Not only does his attempt to use the QQ to “quell” the rebellion totally backfire, in MJ, he gets egg on his face when he prematurely declares Katniss is dead. He even admits to Katniss at the end, that he let Coin get the better of him.

          SPM

But I thought the MJ dress didn’t become the MJ dress until it spontaneously combusted to burn the white overlay and reveal the hidden black feathers underneath, or whatever. If that’s true, the Capitol citizens didn’t vote for the MJ dress at all, because they didn’t even know it existed as such. To them it just looked like a wedding dress.

          •
            Satsuma

I agree that in the book, the Capitol citizens didn’t vote for an “MJ dress”. However, I do find it plausible that where Movie!canon is concerned, the Capitolites could have voted for the dress we saw in the Capitol Portrait of Katniss, which did have some Mockingjay elements.

Since as I recall, you and others questioned whether Snow would have ever let Katniss wear the dress in the Portrait. I think we can make a plausible case, that he felt he had no choice, because the Capitol citizens voted for the dress themselves without realizing the MJ was a symbol of rebellion.

That being said, I think it’s also quite possible that we won’t see any of these outfits in the actual movie, but that LG simply decided to show a dress with Mockingjay elements as a form of foreshadowing.

Nice. Occam’s Razor guides me to your latter theory, but I can see it either way.

I love the portrait of Johanna, the dress is perfect, tree ‘s foliage inspiration. She looks like she is going to murder someone because of what they force her to do. She looks like she won’t mind dropping the rose at any minute.

It’s actually the first portrait when The character is clearly here. I mean the others portraits are fine but they are a bit blank. Jena Malone, just brought Johanna in only one picture. Johanna is here

I am NOT happy about Perez Hilton getting the Peeta reveal after that trashy, deceptive headline he wrote about Josh being jealous of Jen’s success.

    You are unworthy, Hilton. UNWORTHY.

    •

gosh, i hope he doesn’t fill the post with his usual inane babbling. i mean, not that i’m even going to look at what he writes, i’m just going to jump straight to the picture, but peeta deserves better than that. i do wonder what lionsgate was thinking with this choice.

      •
        Marty

I have to agree with both of you on this one. I just don’t see the connection. I hope he doesn’t write on the portrait itself, though I’m sure that Lionsgate has restrictions on things like that, but it is Perez Hilton after all.

As far as Johanna goes though…I absolutely love the dress and her I’d kill you right now if I could expression.

OMG, you mean that stupid spray-paint thing he does? I swear to God if that idiot desecrates Peeta’s portrait I’m siccing Johanna on him. Actually, I’d cut him myself for that.

I’m not really feeling this picture. I’ve always seen her in something more sleek and def. not a dress. Still Malone is an excellent actress so I’m confident in her ability.

I agree that the movie is definitely looking more sophisticated. Even this roll out or the previous picture of KP in white just seems more compelling than THG. I kind of get the same feeling with Lawrence’s other movies, Water for Elephants and I am Legend. It kind of reminds me of the director’s personality. Very open and emotionally deep. I have to say I think Ross did a good job but I think Lawrence might be the greater artist.

I wonder if they are keeping this character in the dark to make us look forward to it or maybe she just doesn’t play as big of a role in the movie

So far, I think Catching Fire deserves at least an Oscar nomination for Best Costume Design.

    They really nailed it!!

      I agree. Best costumes ever!
They have improved a lot, in my opinion, and I like how the white rose each tribute is holding symbolizes a hint of rebellion.
They really have ‘ignited the spark’!!
Keep up the good work Catching Fire :)

I’ve noticed that only the tributes, who participated in the 75th Hunger Games look straight into the camera, while any other look in the distance.

Whoa! Jena nails the Johanna look in my opinion, she’s more striking than magazine-cover beautiful.

Love all the details in her dress, especially that collar and the bracelet. Her hair is also fantastic.

  19.
    Satsuma

While I don’t agree with desecrating portraits, I keep imaging a thought bubble above Johanna’s head with the words, “My stylist is an idiot…”

Because while this dress is certainly much more sophisticated than the Tribute Parade outfit (at least as described in the book, which sounded like a tree costume a kid would wear in a play for grade school or summer camp), it is still is obviously inspired by tree elements.

The other thing I noticed is, the streak of eyeshadow under her lower eye. That reminds of “teardrop” tattoos sported by gang members, that are meant to correspond to the number of times they’ve killed people. Somewhat chilling!

    •
      SPM

LOL. I could live with that as long as it’s not in that godawful pink spray paint or whatever it is he uses.

And interesting theory on the eyeshadow streak, which I could not make sense of except to determine that it was there on purpose.
