Here are the Results for our Mockingjay Scavenger Hunt!
A couple weeks ago we held a Mockingjay Scavenger Hunt in honor of Katniss’s birthday, and a staggering almost 200 of you participated in the contest, giving us your best answer to our final trivia question: ”Besides the fact that it’s a symbol for the rebellion, Katniss also associates the Mockingjay with one person she cares about. Who is this person?”
We got many different answers, the most popular ones being Katniss’s father, Prim and Madge. If you didn’t get it right, don’t be discouraged! We know it was a tough question, and there were many good answers because Katniss associates many characters with the mockingjay (be it the bird, the pin or even the title itself) in some way or another.
The answer we were looking for, however– the person Katniss most directly associates with a mockingjay– was Rue. There are many reasons for this. For example, Rue begins to trust Katniss because of the mockingjay pin she wears as a token to the arena; Katniss even tries to give her the pin but she won’t accept it. She teaches Katniss how in District Eleven they use the mockingjays, who can reproduce the sounds of whistling and singing, as a form of communication; the two of them then use the mockingjays to let each other know they’re safe. Katniss repeatedly mentions in the books that Rue moves from tree to tree like a bird. But most importantly, in the second book Katniss even dreams that Rue is a mockingjay. From Catching Fire, chapter 6:
“I had a dream, though,” I say, thinking back. “I was following a mockingjay through the woods. For a long time. It was Rue, really. I mean, when it sang, it had her voice.”
“Where did she take you?” [Peeta] says, brushing my hair off my forehead.
“I don’t know. We never arrived,” I say. “But I felt happy.”
60 people sent in the correct answer, and only this answer. Unfortunately, we can only choose one winner, and that was Caroline S., who will be receiving a Katniss Tonner Doll as her prize! Congratulations to her! But we also want to acknowledge everybody else who got the question right, so if you’re in the list below, give yourself a big pat on the back for a job well done:
