Variety is reporting that home-entertainment sales are going through the roof digitally! Have you picked up a copy of Catching Fire? Read an excerpt from the article by Variety:

Lionsgate stormed digital opening-weekend homevideo sales of “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” claiming the film scored record digital numbers for the studio that were up 40% compared with the first installment of the franchise in 2012.

The studio sold 3.9 million DVD and Blu-ray copies of “Catching Fire,” flat compared with the first “Hunger Games” release in August 2012. However, Lionsgate added that Blu-Ray titles were 50% of all packaged media sales of “Catching Fire” compared with 35% of packaged media sales for the first film.

“This is a monster opening and a tremendous result for the second film in a franchise, underscoring the enormous momentum of The Hunger Games films,” Ron Schwartz, Lionsgate president and GM of Home Entertainment Sales & Distribution, said in a statement.

While “Hunger Games” was not # 1 in the 2012 domestic box office it was #1 in DVD sales easily beating its closest competitor (“Brave”), and the #1 box office movie (“Avengers”). “Catching Fire” does not need to surpass the “Hunger Games” numbers to be the # 1 seller in 2014 – it simply has to match them. Add increased Blue Ray and digital download sales and it could become a Tsunami.
