Welcome to Mockingjay.net, the most visited source on the web dedicated to the Hunger Games! We were founded in July of 2009, before the title of the third book had been announced. We're here to have fun with other Hunger Games fans with discussion, contests, the Jabberjays podcast, and an up to date news blog that covers anything related to the books or the upcoming film that is being made by Lionsgate.

New Picture of Effie, Haymitch and Peeta

We have a new still from the movie! In the first picture, you can see Effie liberally re-applying her make-up and then, in the second we get a zoomed in picture of Haymitch and Peeta and their elaborate (and delicious) looking capitol dinner. The white roses in the pictures can only be the work of President Snow, who is in the small inset in the first picture! What scene do you think this could be? The train? The training center?

Elizabeth Banks Talks Effie with TheFABLife

In an interview with TheFABLife, Elizabeth Banks talks a bit about collaborating on Effie Trinket’s look.

“I’m really happy to talk about The Hunger Games, especially with fellow fans,” she said. (You see that? We are “fellow fans” now!) “It’s going to be a great movie. Anytime you make something that you know is going to be highly entertaining and is about something, it’s a really special experience and something that I’m really looking forward to sharing.”

Twitter fans asked us to ask her about Effie costumes, naturally. But despite our newfound bond, she was pretty vague on the matter.

“Effie Trinket is a really theatrical person; she’s outrageous,” she said. “I know that people have a lot of ideas in their minds about what she should look like and we just had a great collaboration. This is what we came up with and Suzanne Collins blessed it, and that was our goal, just making her happy.”

After what’s been revealed on Capitol Couture so far, I admit to getting a whiff of Oscar excitement for next year in regards to Costume Design. It would be amazing to have Effie be at the forefront of that!

New Image of Katniss, Haymitch, and Effie in a Green Wig

Check out this really awesome new image of Katniss, Haymitch, and Effie (in her green wig!!) watching what’s either the recap of the chariot scene or the announcement of their training session scores. There’s a whole lot going on in this image, so let’s break it down!

  • This is a much better look at what we now know is the training center room where they watch TV events and meet for strategy.
  • A new outfit and wig for Effie, with a very poofy shoulder area of a bright aqua blouse with matching miniskirt.
  • We see a bit of Haymitch’s attitude in the way he’s “sitting” with a drink on his belly, watching with a mixed look of concern, hostility, and nonchalance.
  • Katniss is curled up and looking up at the TV with anxiety.
  • Peeta’s legs! Ooh la la! (kidding)
  • Two light blue drinks sit on top of the counter. What could they be?! I should start looking into this for Fictional Food!
  • An odd glass (?) decoration can be seen behind them. Just part of the room?

Effie Created by Academy Award-Nominated “Fans”

Effie Trinket

From where we sit as fans, it can be so hard to trust a film adaptation to people we don’t know. Sure, we “know” the actors and director to a certain degree, but what about the people who create the look of the characters? The costume designers and make up artists make such a huge contribution to a character that they can flop the entire portrayal with the wrong clothes (*cough* Edward’s wardrobe in Twilight *cough*). We’ve only seen Effie in one outfit, so what about the rest of her? In a new interview with New York Magazine, Elizabeth Banks helps dispel some of the anxiety about Effie’s character.

Did you yourself feel some trepidation about playing a character in a book you adore so much?

I didn’t. I was just so excited. I’m really excited about my portrayal. I like the voice — I worked really hard on the voice. The hair and makeup didn’t happen immediately. It was a couple days of playing and tweaking, and she really kind of suddenly appeared to us. If I could remove myself from the situation, I would be really excited by my portrayal of Effie.

As a fan, did you make any specific contributions to her character?

All the makeup was very collaborative. It was like, “Hey, when I read the book, I always imagined she was like this.” Everybody was like, “Yeah, I always thought she was this,” or “I thought she was this,” or “This would look better.” It was really a bunch of fans sitting around discussing what our visions were for everything. And then of course there are practical things, like I imagined District 12 — and they pretty much nailed it — like it was in the south in an old mining town. And that’s what we shot. And the Games actually blew me away. What I was imagining was too small.

MTV Hollywood Crush has the exclusive scoop on this gorgeous official promo shot of Effie Trinket as the “face” of Capitol Colours, the official line of nail polish glazes from Lionsgate and China Glaze. All I have to say is, WOW! I really hope they are in talks to sell those butterfly lashes. That would make for such a fantastic touch to Effie cosplay at the premiere!
