Title: A Capitol Experience
Author: Claratrix LeChatham
Blurb:
An average, violent, bloody, Hunger Games. The tribute who will win is not decided, and you, the Capitol, have the power to keep your favorite alive. Happy Hunger Games! The Games have begun!

Excerpt:
Our mayor did eventually make an appearance; such lateness as his is frowned upon by the Capitol, however. More than likely, we will have a new mayor next year. Our current one has been increasingly inflammatory against the President. We’ll miss him, nonetheless.

I found it impossible to fully comprehend what he was saying, beneath his thick District Ten accent, and the voices of my peers. Theano, in particular. She grates on my nerves uncomfortably.

The speech the mayor was making came to a close awkwardly. Our escort, however, was vivacious as always as she skipped up to the platform. She was wearing an over-emphasized pair of glasses, though I had no doubts that her vision was perfect, and her hair was alternating streaks of purple and gold. The look did not complement her in the least.

“I know you’re all just as excited for the Hunger Games as me. This year, District Ten will have a victor!”

She performed a strange dance, pumping the air with her fist and alternately gyrating. It was likely awkward to do, and even more uncomfortable to watch.

We all breathed a sigh of relief when she stopped, and dizzily walked to the bowl from which the girl’s name would be chosen. A lesser person than I would have been hoping for Theano’s name to be pulled, but I was simply focused on my name not being chosen.

“Hypatia Leanodas!”

I hesitated. I had seen enough snippets of previous reapings to know that I was supposed to walk up to the stage to be led into the justice building. But how had I been picked? My father would rather starve than apply for any tessarae.

Out of thousands of slips, I had been only one. The odds, as any escort would put it, were in my favor.

I thought this was a really cool idea. The winner has not been decided by the author, people can send their favorite tributes gifts like sponsors. The readers are the “capitol” and ultimately choose who lives and dies, in a group of entirely new tributes. Very creative! The author has just gotten through introducing each character, and the games have begun!

Title: A Fox’s View
Author: Caisha702
Blurb: The Hunger Games from Foxface’s perspective.

Excerpt:
“Her name’s Rue,” he says. “She shouldn’t be here. She’s still a child.”

“I don’t think you will be the one to kill her.”

He stands up in response and takes a couple of long strides towards me. When he stops he is still a fair distance away, but he is close enough to remind me of the fact that he is nearly two feet taller than me and at least four times my weight, which I suppose was his intention.

“Don’t think that because I’m soft on the little girl I won’t kill in the arena,” he says in a low voice.

“I didn’t say that you wouldn’t kill, I said that you wouldn’t kill her.”

“You’re up to something, fox-girl. The girl I’m speaking to isn’t the person who she was at training.”

He’s cleverer than I thought. “We are all up to something, Thresh. Everybody wants to live.”

He inclines his head to me slightly and walks away towards the dome. Just before he disappears from my sight, he turns back.

“I won’t hunt you down, fox-girl, you have my word. But if we meet, I’ll have no choice.”

I nod in reply and return to my position looking out over the railing at the Capitol. I could kill Claudius. Him and his copper dress. I might as well have had the ears and tail because if Thresh knows me only as ‘fox-girl’ then that must be the lasting impression I have made. I hear the bell ring as the lift takes him away. I don’t hate him, I don’t even hate the Careers. The Capitol has made them what they are. It is the Capitol that causes all of this pain and suffering then has the nerve to call it entertainment. It is the Capitol that I truly despise.

Title: Through Another’s Eyes
Author: Lost In the Stars
Blurb: Because the story changes when told through another set of eyes. The Hunger Games from Peeta’s perspective.

Excerpt: I notice Gale. He’s staring in my direction, and I turn to see that he is looking at her, and she is staring back. They seem to be talking silently. Their faces identical masks of worry for the other. It hits so suddenly that I barely register the blinding jealousy that fills me. She’ll never look at me like that, my thoughts rage. I’m so deep in my sudden despair that I barely notice that Effie Trinket is now digging around in the girl’s bowl. I come back to reality just as she walks back to the podium.

She clears her throat and announces in a loud, cheerfully happy voice: “Primrose Everdeen.” For all of one second, I rejoice in the fact that it’s not her. Then one second later it hits me.

Primrose Everdeen.

Everdeen.

Katniss Everdeen.

I look over at her. She’s frozen in shock, looking almost winded.

“Prim! “ She shouts, then possessed by shock and grief, she streaks past me, and shoves her sister behind her. It’s then that I hear the words that cause my world to fall broken around me. “I volunteer! I volunteer as tribute!”

Fanfiction Thursday: The Hunger Games Premiere

Title: The Hunger Games Premiere
Author: laxgoal31
Summary: The very first Hunger Games. Follows the story of a boy named Corran Skirata, who is originally from District 13, now living in District 12. Also includes ancestors of characters in the actual book, as well as background on the major rebellion of Panem.

Excerpt: I hear my uncle’s voice from the sitting room, “Corran. Come in here. I want you to see this; it concerns you.” He sounds serious. Something about the tone in his voice makes me instantly release Aden and go into where he is.

He points at the old television. “Look at the news.”

The TV is showing the national news. The Capitol reporter, a pierced man with blue hair is saying “…as a result of the uprising against the Capitol by the thirteen Districts of Panem, the Capitol has instituted the Hunger Games. The Hunger Games will be a mandatory contest between twenty-four tributes, two from each remaining District, one boy and one girl each. The ages of the competitors will range from twelve to eighteen. The twenty four will compete to kill each other in a vast outdoor arena, with only one remaining victorious. More details to follow.”

Uncle Dane shuts off the TV. His face looks haggard and worn as he says to me, “Well, what do think of that?”

“It’s awful,” I say. “Taking kids from each District and forcing them to kill each other in a bloody fight to the death? Only the Capitol would think of something that cruel.”

Uncle Dane muses, “It certainly does send a message: We won’t kill you; we’ll kill your children. And it’s all because of the rebellion. You know, the memories of your parents deserve better than this.”

Fanfiction: What was Gale thinking at the Reaping?

So Little Time by KattaBear.

Summary: When Katniss was chosen for the Hunger Games, what was Gale doing? The reaping from the point of view of Gale.
Rating: All Ages
Excerpt:
There is so little time.

Moments ago I watched Katniss volunteer at the Reaping, and now I run as quickly as possible to the Justice Building. The events seem unbelievable. Although I always knew one of us could be drawn for the games, it never seemed realistic. Well, now it is realistic, I think harshly. All too realistic. I trip and curse under my breath. My foot throbs, and tears pool in the corners of my eyes. I start to feel sorry for myself, but I remember Katniss – wonderful Katniss who currently sits in the Justice Building waiting for the train ride to her death. I shake this thought away. Optimism, cautious optimism will rule my thoughts now. Katniss is strong and able. She can win it, I try to convince myself.

I curse again but this time my anger is directed at the swarms of people going home after the Reaping. They move like cows, slowly and without a care in the world because only a baker’s son and a girl from the Seam will die for District 12 this year. They are safe. I glance at a clock on the street. There is so little time. The Peacekeepers only keep the tributes at the Justice Building for an hour and then whisk them off to the Capitol. I break into a run. I don’t care about the people I’m shoving and stepping on. I need to get to the Justice Building before they leave.

“I stared at the loaves in disbelief. They were fine, perfect really, execept for the burned areas. Did he mean for me to have them? He must have, because they were there at my feet. Before anyone could witness what had happened, I shoved the loaves up my shirt, wrapped the hunting jacket tightly about me, and walked swiftly away. The bread burned into my skin, but I clutched it tighter, clinging to life.”
