Eyes Open, Taylor Swift’s second song to be featured on the soundtrack The Hunger Games: Songs From District 12 and Beyond, now has an official music video. Unfortunately, apart from the lyrics, references to The Hunger Games are thin on the ground in the stop motion video.

Here’s a really sweet song written and performed by @SamiGreenwood called ‘As the World Catches Fire’. The video quality isn’t the greatest, but it’s still a very pretty song! What do you all think? I think T-Bone should line her up for the next companion album! ;)

Soundtrack Producer Greg Wells Talks About ‘Songs From District 12 and Beyond’

Music producer Greg Wells spoke to PopMatters about his time in the industry, artists he’d still love to collaborate with and his work with producer T-Bone Burnett on The Hunger Games companion soundtrack The Hunger Games: Songs From District 12 and Beyond. Wells was brought in to work on the album at the request of Burnett because he “was more in line with Top 40 radio.”

…The first task Burnett gave Wells was creating a version of the Taylor Swift/Civil Wars song, “Safe and Sound”, that would be different than the version on the soundtrack, and more appropriate for Top 40 radio. Wells explains, “[Burnett] said, ‘I’m not going to come watch you work, I’m not going to sit over your shoulder. I think you should just take these vocals and take this main acoustic guitar track, and just do what feels right to you. When you feel like the cake is baked, or baked enough, I’ll come by your studio and give it a listen.’

“So that’s exactly what I did, I just followed my nose. And that’s pretty much what I do with whoever I’m working with. I try not to overthink things, I just sort of lead with my gut feeling. There were some rhythm elements in his original version that I really liked that sneak in toward the end, kind of a rolling, marching snare drum thing, and I thought ‘Maybe we can start the song with something like that.’ It was important to me to have the same kind of intention and feeling that his version did. I didn’t want it to sound like apples and oranges. I just wanted to give it a bit more momentum. Then they came by and really liked it, and everyone, including Taylor, encouraged me to take it even further, and up the energy even more. And I’m quite proud with how it turned out.”

Wells also talked about sitting in the studio with T-Bone Burnett and Kid Cudi, the process of collectively creating the song The Ruler and the Killer and his knowledge of The Hunger Games before working on the soundtrack:

“I love how kind of quirky the thing is, and none of us knew we were gonna write a song that sounded anything like that! It’s a weird little menacing song. And Cudi just really tried to dial in the Donald Sutherland character in the movie. It’s very oppressive and messed up—evil. That’s the perspective of the singer in that song, and I like how creepy we got it.”

His success with the song was interesting, considering that he didn’t have any prior experience with The Hunger Games… “I was somehow unaware of the massive phenomenon that is that book series. But I got played a very long trailer that I don’t think was ever released, a ten-minute trailer that was put together and really gave me a huge feel for what the movie is, and the arc of the whole story—and I was so sucked in. It was an incredible little vignette from that movie, and I was pretty much just like, ‘OK, I’m in! This is amazing. There’s nothing like it.’”

You can read much more about Greg Wells’ involvement on the soundtrack at this link. This article beautifully sums up the achievement of the companion album:

The soundtrack itself stands as one of the great film soundtracks of recent years. It, like Burnett’s soundtrack for the Coen Brothers’ film, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, and every soundtrack for every Quentin Tarantino film ever created, is a narrative in its own right, allowing the listener to know and live in the world of the film long after the screen goes dark… creating a rich tapestry true to the dystopian, Appalachian core of both the film and the books.

Do you think the companion album fitted ‘Seam’-lessly with Katniss’ world and which is your favourite track?

The companion album for ‘The Hunger Games’ movie, Songs from District 12 and Beyond debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart this week.

“The Hunger Games” soundtrack debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, having sold 175,000 copies in its first week according to Nielsen SoundScan.

It’s the first theatrical film soundtrack to top the chart since ” Michael Jackson’s This Is It” bowed at No. 1 on the list dated Nov. 14, 2009. “The Hunger Games” is the first multi-artist film soundtrack to reach No. 1 since one week before Jackson, when “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” rose from No. 2 to No. 1 in its second week on the tally.

All told, “The Hunger Games” is only the 16th soundtrack to debut at No. 1 in the history of the Billboard 200 chart. (Those soundtracks include film, TV and straight-to-video efforts.)

“The Hunger Games” set boasts an array of artists, including Taylor Swift, the Civil Wars, Arcade Fire, Maroon 5 and Miranda Lambert. It’s the companion album to the film of the same name, which grossed $152.5 million at the U.S. and Canada box office last weekend (March 23-25)

In addition to the companion album, the Original Motion Picture Score for ‘The Hunger Games’ was released on Monday.

The talent already on board The Hunger Games companion album Songs from District 12 and Beyond was already quite impressive, with Taylor Swift, The Civil Wars, Maroon 5, and Neko Case, but now Deadline is reporting that Sting has recorded a version of the Lullaby that Katniss sings to Prim and Rue in the movie, which will be available for download on March 27 to people who purchased the album.

For me, it’ll be awesome to hear it again because I was so busy crying while watching the movie that I don’t remember what it sounded like at all… :(
