Isabelle Fuhrman Talks Playing Clove, Doing All Her Own Stunts, and Auditioning for Katniss

What was it like to audition for The Hunger Games?
I actually auditioned originally for Katniss. I was fourteen when I auditioned, and I was too young. I was really upset because I thought I wasn’t going to be in it, and I got a call two weeks later that they wanted me to audition for Clove. I learned two weeks after that that they wanted me for the part. I was so happy that I cried.

How do you feel about playing the villain?
I think it’s more fun because you get to dive into the character’s soul and figure out what made them so bad. No one’s just bad; to be bad, there are small, little reasons, and big, monumental things that have happened and caused them to be that way.

Clove makes the first kill during the bloodbath and comes closest to killing Katniss. Was it physically difficult to film those dark scenes?
It was a lot of work, definitely. But I thought it was a lot of fun at the same time. The entire cast got to bond because we did all of our training exercises together. I wanted to do all of my own stunts; I wouldn’t let the stunt double do anything.

The female characters in The Hunger Games are just as smart and powerful as the males. Did you find this empowering?
Definitely! Especially getting to learn how to use all the weapons and how to actually fight. That gave me a whole other confidence that I didn’t know would ever happen because I’m so small. It’s cool to be able to know that I’m a lot stronger than I thought I was.
