Stars of Catching Fire stepped out in their evening best on the red carpet, after their photo-call earlier today at the Cannes Film Festival in France! As we mentioned a couple days ago, Lionsgate will be promoting The Hunger Games: Catching Fire at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. Today is the day of the presentation, and cast members Liam Hemsworth, Jennifer Lawrence and Sam Claflin, as well as director Francis Lawrence and producer Nina Jacobson, are in France to be a part of the event. Toby Jones’ 2012 thriller Berberian Sound Studio is finally making its way stateside this June, and a new, international trailer has been released. The film was directed by Peter Strickland. Here’s the synopsis for it:

In the 1970s, a British sound technician is brought to Italy to work on the sound effects for a gruesome horror film. His nightmarish task slowly takes over his psyche, driving him to confront his own past. Berberian Sound Studio is many things: an anti-horror film, a stylistic tour de force, and a dream of cinema. As such, it offers a kind of pleasure that is rare in films, while recreating in a highly original way the pleasures of Italian horror cinema.

You may recall his performance in this film earned Jones the title of Best Actor at the 2012 British Independent Film Awards, as well as the Best British Actor of the Year award from the London Film Critics’ Circle, so that should be incentive enough to watch the trailer! The sound effects alone make it chilling.

Lionsgate has announced that they’ve signed an exclusive deal with Covergirl, making the company their exclusive make-up partner. From the official press release:

HUNT VALLEY, MD, May 17, 2013 — Today, COVERGIRL announced its first-ever major movie sponsorship of Lionsgate’s highly anticipated The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, scheduled for release in North American theaters on November 22, 2013. COVERGIRL will launch a first-of-its-kind creative advertising campaign inspired by the film, featuring new products from the brand’s upcoming Capitol Collection from The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, to be announced at a later date.

Deadline has also provided some more info on the reason why ‘Catching Fire’ has such a huge presence at Cannes:

Spectacularly Catching Fire is literally aflame at the entrance to the Majestic Hotel thanks to animations projected onto screens. Lionsgate co-chair Patrick Wachsberger whose wheelhouse is international also utilized Cannes to promote all the Twilight movies when he ran Summit. Now that the two studios are merged, he says with candor that he’s never done an event “at this level”. But because Hunger Games is a “huge, huge, huge” franchise, this festival is “the perfect place” to start talking to distributors about positioning, he notes. Cannes events “are not cheap,” he says. “And there is so much happening – like 10 parties the same night – so to do something that’s really out of the ordinary, you need the movie first and the talent and the event and the money,” Wachsberger admits.

Lionsgate is also organising a beach blowout to promote the film, so the world will most definitely be watching!

Director Francis Lawrence talked with SciFiNow about The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and revealed a bit about the spinning Cornucopia and also talked a bit about some new scenes added with Gale.

One of the page-to-screen moments that Lawrence can’t wait for fans to see is the spinning cornucopia, which houses weapons that tributes can steal for themselves.

“There is a moment we have in the arena when the gamemaker starts to spin the cornucopia, and I’m very proud of that,” he tells us.

“We designed a very cool sequence and created a spinning island, and that’s going to be very, very cool. So that’s kind of fun and very unique. I’ve never seen anything like it.”

“One of the very first things we shot was a sort of goodbye before Katniss goes into the arena that I like a lot. We actually shot it while we were in prep. We went out into a meadow, out in the mountains in north Georgia and shot this sequence over three or four hours, and I really like it.
