We’re back again with our third week of Casting Fire in which the Mockingjay.net staff discusses the potential of actors for roles in ‘Catching Fire’. This week we’re discussing Richard Jenkins, who recently starred in the Lionsgate film ‘The Cabin in the Woods’.

I recently saw Richard Jenkins in Cabin in the Woods and thought he was quite good. However, he doesn’t really scream Beetee for me as much as some of our other casting choices. He does sport glasses and the nerd look well, but not really in the way that I imagined Beetee. Richard Jenkins in my mind is typecast as a teacher, a principal, an uncle, or a doctor. He may be a great actor, but he’s just not my Beetee. That being said, his role in ‘Cabin in the Woods’ was quite… relevant to a role as Plutarch instead of Beetee!

Erin

The only thing I’ve ever seen Richard Jenkins in is when he played Justin Timberlake’s dad in ‘Friends With Benefits’. Based on that role alone, I can’t say whether or not he would make a good Beetee. Too me, he looks older than I imagine Beetee to be (he’s in his mid-60s) and he doesn’t look like much of a nerd. Of course, the right pair of glasses and some time in makeup could cure all that, but as of right now I’d have to say that Richard is not my Beetee.

I have to admit I had no idea who Richard Jenkins was by name, and then like Erin after I looked him up the only thing I’ve seen him in is ‘Friends With Benefits’. I thought he did a great job in that film, but overall he just seems a little too sophisticated to play Beetee, and doesn’t quite have the right look. I also have to agree that he is perhaps a bit too old as I always imagined Beetee to be around the mid-40s. He certainly does have the bit of a world-weary look about him and I’m sure hair and make-up could do wonders but I don’t think he is Beetee.

Yes, yes, yes! Talk about an underrated character actor. Richard is my dream casting for Beetee because I think the man can do no wrong. He was the best part of Cabin in the Woods, and he can nail both drama and comedy. I really can’t say enough good things about him. Fingers crossed he gets considered for the role.

Ciara

He’s one of those actors where you know the face because you’ve seen him in dozens of things. And Richard Jenkins never disappoints. This would be an inspired choice for Beetee, he can say so much emotion in just a look and I think he’d play a more withered, sympathetic character than the Beetee I have in my head (not that that’s a bad thing). He would be such a fantastic addition to the cast and I’d love to see an older gentlemen like him be reaped for the Games, it’d make a nice contrast and show just how fresh Katniss and Peeta are to this game. Yes, Richard Jenkins, please! I can just imagine his subtle, no-dialogue performance when Wiress dies and I’m already welling up! Cast Richard Jenkins!

We’re back for Week 3 of Casting Fire, bringing you more potential casting choices for ‘Catching Fire.’ Up for discussion this Tuesday is another fan favourite for Johanna, Mila Kunis!

Fans may know Mila best for her role in ‘That 70s Show’ or as the voice of Meg from ‘Family Guy’ but recently Mila has appeared in ‘Black Swan’ and ‘Friends With Benefits.’

Opinions were pretty divided this week, so jump in with your thoughts below!

Beth

She seems to be the fan favorite, but I’m not completely on board with this. I’m not really sure why I’m not on board because I actually really like Mila. I think she’s great. I just don’t think she’s necessarily right for Johanna. She might be a little on the older side to what I imagined. She almost seems too funny to me and not tough enough. I think we have better choices. Of course, I wouldn’t be disappointed if she was cast, by any means, but I wouldn’t be thrilled either.

Ciara

I wouldn’t have a problem with Mila Kunis at all. She’s a wonderful actress and only in the last few years has she stopped being overlooked. She can easily pull off the tough side of Johanna and she’d be pitch perfect in the elevator scene with Katniss and Peeta – the mask of nice and friendly yet so obviously intimidating. But the reason I really want Mila is because her timing is perfection and, above all for me, Johanna really makes me laugh. She has some of the best straight talking insult lines in Mockingjay and Kunis syncs seamlessly with the character because she’d play it for real. Plus she’s more than capable of conveying Johanna’s darker and lonelier qualities.

I know there are a lot of Mila Kunis supporters out there, but I can’t really get on board. Maybe it’s because I watched her for so many years play the ditz on That 70s Show. I saw her in Black Swan and she definitely has the acting talent to take on the role of Johanna, but similar to Michelle Rodriguez, she also has this innate Tough Girl look about her. Even when she was young, she looked like she could whoop you if you got her mad. She’s got part of Johanna in her, but not all of Johanna.

Erin

I would love to see Mila Kunis play Johanna. I never even considered her for Johanna until a couple months ago when I saw someone suggest her– now I can’t picture anyone but her in the role! See can look innocent when she wants to and would have no problem pulling off the bitchy tough girl. I also think she has the necessary skill to pull off the vulnerability needed in Mockingjay. However, she’s probably ‘too big a name’ to get the part, but I can always hope.

I’m totally on board with this and would love to see Mila cast as Johanna. I know Friends with Benefits is a romcom but those who’ve seen it will understand what I mean when I say she had a large emotional range in that film and show cased a lot of what she can do. Mila can definitely do the tough and bitchy veneer with the fragile girl underneath, and I can see her throwing an axe and pinning Katniss down, parts that definitely need to be seen in Catching Fire. I also think she could do a great job of growing Johanna as a character into Mockingjay as well. As Erin said though she is probably that bit too famous now, but I can dream!
