What do you want to see in the trailer?
« on: October 10, 2012, 02:02:44 PM »
Title speaks for itself.  I wouldn't be surprised if we saw the first teaser in the next couple months.

Here's some ideas for the teaser trailers (not the full ones):

- Rebellion Teaser: Angry District 8. Angry District 11. Gale's whipping.
- Rebellion consequences teaser:  Peacekeeper's outside Katniss' home (if we're going to get the peacekeepers scene after she tries to jump over the electrified fence). The Hob burning in District 12. Gale's whipping. Life getting worse in District 12.
- "Want a suger cube?" Teaser: showing some of the victors without actually saying anything about the arena would be great.

You know, only one of these or something different would make me very happy already, but what if we got like multiple teasers showing very specific stuff, like what they did with American Horror Story: Asylum?

I actually extensively wrote about that for a guest post on Victor's Village blog. I talk about this specific topic (trailers for Catching Fire), with a focus on what and what not to reveal. The post is not up yet (I've been told it will be sometime around next week or something), but I'll make sure to quote / link it here to add more to the discussion, as I'd like to talk with you guys about a few points I brought up there.

I think that a pretty effective teaser trailer would be one that, starting from the feet and up, and in-between flashes of black, showed Finnick in his tribute parade outfit.

Oh yeah. Talk about a real "teaser".

Yeah, I'd like to get the other victors with that as well. Johanna's outfit (or rather, lack thereof)? Yes?

Abel Toy - I'll definitely be keeping my eyes peeled for that post!

I reckon we will see a teaser before Breaking Dawn Pt 2, I see no reason why they couldn't at least get *something* ready to show us by then and it's been pretty standard practice as well - there was a teaser for BD before The Hunger Games in cinemas and especially now that Lionsgate own Summit we should have the "favour" returned.

I really like the idea about showing some of the rebellion, it was hinted at towards the end of the first film and there has to be some kind of draw card for audiences to want to see the second film. As fans and book lovers we know what happens, but thinking about the audience as a whole the movie has to look interesting.

I hope that they don't reveal through any of the trailers that Katniss and Peeta are going back in the games, but I think that has already been spoiled for everyone by various media agents (it seems every time they mention CF they talk about Katniss and Peeta returning to the arena). THG's marketing was effective only showing snippets of the arena, so I think they could certainly do the same and just give us glimpses of forest and focus on other aspects, like the rebellion and new tributes.

Here's my guest post, published: Catching Fire, The Trailer

So, what do you think about the points I bring up and my different ideas for the teasers and the trailers?

I really enjoyed your post :) I keep thinking that unfortunately they are going to have to mention the quarter quell, but maybe to 'get away with it', you could have Snow announce the 75th Games is a special event, but then don't have the line about previous victors going in. Then you could just have jungle shots of the arena and the beach, maybe passing shots of tributes in training but you don't see their faces? Although that's not really overly exciting either.

I'm expecting that we will see some element of rebellion though, maybe while Katniss and Peeta are on their victory tour we see the crowds pushing back and maybe even the gun shot going off in D11? But that goes back to your first idea of using President Snow which I do like, he was established as the villain at the end of THG so even non-book readers would realise the threat he poses. Perhaps you could have a trailer much like THG finished off, you see President Snow first watching footage of them again and then rocking up at Katniss' house.

Loved your last teaser idea about drunk Katniss, it's one of my favourite scenes and I desperately hope it makes it to the movie. I think the teaser might be more book fan based, that would be pretty awesome.

As with many of the other what to see in CF threads, there's so much great stuff in the books that it's hard to choose what I most want to see.
Huge THG fan since movie. Fanfic writer and Gale fan http://bit.ly/RctycP.
"I really DO enjoy these stories. Never thought much of Gale before. I like him almost better than Peeta here. Can see why he was a better match for Katniss overall indeed. Weird that he didn't end up with her. SC wrote him into such an almost evil character in the later books, ugh." -FFN Don't Call Me Sparkles

There was a similar topic on IMDB a while back. Two things I remember suggesting were:

"I had to do that. Just once" (and Katniss' shocked face). Don't show the actual kiss, the audience will infer it for themselves. Having just that line in the trailer will make them more eager to see it on screen.

Katniss' "No!" as the whip comes down on Gale.

It wasn't only Katniss and Gale moments, for some reason, those are the only ones coming to mind right now  :P I'll add more as I remember them.

Well, they're most likely not going to show any of the arena scenes. I really hope they don't, builds the suspense when you're watching the actual movie.

They can go two ways with the trailer - announcing the Quarter Quell and then ending it, or reaping Katniss and Peeta and show all the Capitol scenes like in the first trailer. As much as I'd prefer the trailer not spoiling the big Quarter Quell reveal, majority of the people will have already been spoilt on the plot twists as it was in the novel.

And I really, really do hope they emphasize on the clock for us book fans (like they did with the whistle). Heck I wouldn't even be surprised if one of the tag lines was "Tick tock, this is a clock."

I would like to see the countdown while they are on the pedestals.  The number flashes on the screen and in between each number they show the faces of the tributes, ending with Katniss at number one.

Hopefully they haven't picked up Summit's terrible marketing procedures in the merger.
It drives me crazy that I've basically seen all of Warm Bodies by now and even if I hadn't read the book, the trailers have already given away the ending and how it happens.
Most people have read CF by now, but I still don't want to see anything from the arena.
It needs to be vague and unhelpful and we need to get people excited by word of mouth and title alone.

Absolutely, they have already given away the whole "Katniss goes back into the arena" thing but as I commented on the site I want the why, the how and what happens to be kept very much a secret. They could easily build up other aspects, show glimpses of the other tributes, make you wonder how on earth will Katniss get out alive and make you wonder about Finnick and Johanna in particular.
